What’s Your Type?
The Importance of Typography in Your Visual Identity
When you think about your brand identity, what springs to mind?
Your logo?
Your colours?
Your photography?
Your fancy new website?
Typography should be up there too.
Your logo might be the thing people remember, but your typography is doing a lot of the heavy lifting.
So, what’s the big deal about typography?
Typography has personality.
Some fonts feel serious and established. Others are playful, bold, modern, elegant or a little bit rebellious.
And just like your favourite clothing says something about you, the typeface you use says something about your business.
Imagine a luxury brand using Comic Sans… It’s just not going to cut it! It won’t send quite the right message.
The right typography helps communicate who you are, what you stand for and how you want your audience to feel about you.
That’s why it’s such an important part of your visual identity.
Your font needs to feel like you
One of the biggest mistakes businesses make is choosing typography because it looks nice.
We get it. There are thousands of beautiful fonts out there. It’s very easy to fall down a rabbit hole searching and emerge three hours later with 47 bookmarks and absolutely no idea what you’ve actually chosen.
But your typography shouldn’t just look good.
It needs to feel right.
Are you professional but approachable?
Bold and confident?
Friendly and accessible?
Premium and considered?
Innovative and forward-thinking?
Your typography should support that personality rather than fight against it.
It’s about more than one font
A strong visual identity isn’t necessarily about finding the one perfect typeface.
It’s about creating a typographic system.
You might have one typeface for big, attention-grabbing headlines and another for body copy. You might use different weights, sizes and styles to create hierarchy and help people navigate your content.
Think about:
HEADLINES
Big. Bold. Get noticed.
Subheadings
Clear. Helpful. Keep things moving.
Body copy
Easy to read. Easy on the eye.
Supporting text
Labels, captions, buttons and all those little details that make everything work.
When these elements work together, your communications start to feel consistent and unmistakably yours.
And yes, people notice
Probably not consciously.
That’s the clever bit.
Most people aren’t looking at your website thinking, “That’s a beautifully considered grotesque sans serif.”
But they are making judgements about your business.
Does it feel professional?
Does it feel trustworthy?
Does it feel modern?
Does it feel like it understands them?
Typography contributes to all of those little signals.
It’s part of the overall impression your brand makes.
But don’t forget the boring stuff…
Sorry, we have to say it!
Typography also needs to work.
Because the world’s most beautiful typeface isn’t much use if nobody can read it.
Your typography needs to work across everything your business uses:
- Your website
- Social media
- Presentations
- Brochures
- Reports
- Signage
- Packaging
- Advertising
It needs to work at 6pt and 60pt. On a massive sign and a tiny mobile screen.
It needs to be legible, accessible and practical.
And, importantly, your team needs to be able to use it consistently.
That’s where good typography moves from being a design decision to becoming part of your brand toolkit.
Typography can make you recognisable
Here’s where things get really interesting.
When your typography, colours, imagery, layouts and other visual elements are consistently used, they start to build recognition.
Eventually, people can recognise your brand before they’ve even seen your logo.
That’s the goal.
Not simply to make something look nice.
To create a visual language that people recognise and remember.
So, how do you choose the right typography?
Start with your brand, not the font menu.
Before choosing typefaces, think about:
Who are you?
What does your business stand for?
Who are you talking to?
What will resonate with your audience?
How do you want to be perceived?
Professional? Friendly? Bold? Premium? Approachable?
Where will your typography be used?
Digital? Print? Packaging? Signage? All of the above?
What does your competition look like?
Because looking exactly like everyone else isn’t particularly helpful.
Once you’ve answered those questions, you can start looking at typography with a bit more purpose.
And that’s when the fun starts.
Don’t underestimate the humble font
Typography might not get quite as much attention as your logo, but it plays a huge role in how your brand is experienced.
- It’s in your headlines.
- It’s in your website.
- It’s in your social posts.
- It’s in your presentations.
- It’s in the little details people see every time they interact with your business.
So don’t just pick a font because you like the look of it.
Choose typography because it says something about you.
Because the right typeface won’t just make your brand look better.
