Things to consider when approaching a design studio

We get approached for many different projects that require various levels of involvement, planning and creativity. We like potential clients to have a few things when they approach us, it helps us decide if we are the right fit for each other.

Here are a few things to consider when approaching a design studio:

  • What kind of work do you need and why?

Are you looking for a rebrand, a new website or an animation? The kind of work and the reason why you’re having something created by us is important. It could be for a fresh new look, to promote a new product or to explain a service that you offer. This gives scope to the project, the reason behind it and how it will benefit your business in the longer term.

  • Budget

Everyone has an idea of budget, although some say they don’t!

Have one in mind, it’s helpful to you as a business to know what you can afford to put forward and it is useful for the design studio to know. They may not be able to work within your budget, but on the flip side, they will more than likely discuss what can be done for your budget and then work up to the next stages of your project.

  • Have a wish list

If you think about what you need before the conversation e.g. Branding, Website, Animation, Social Media Content etc, this gives the design studio something to work with. As with the budget, studios will break these down into achievable chunks onto a timeline for you that can be managed within a budget.

  • Do they have a good reputation?

If you have heard good things about the company or read amazing client testimonials you are generally going to be in good hands. But it’s always worth asking around if you can to try and find out what they are like to work with.

  • Are the design company a good fit for you?

They may fit in terms of budget, but do not make that the defining factor in your decision. Yes, money makes the world go round but how does that saying go? ‘Buy sh*t, buy twice’, some talk a good game but can’t deliver what you will need.

Also, think about how you will get on with them, and think about the studio culture, you are potentially a long-term client and it’s a bonus if you get on with the people you are dealing with.

  • Do you like the studio’s style?

We don’t mean do you like their trainers or t-shirt!

We mean – do you like their work, are you drawn to it, how does it make you feel and would it work well for your business? You can see most studios have a bit of a style from their work so make sure you pick one that you like.
