Naming Your Business

Picture this: You’ve decided to start a business, and you’re pretty sure you’ve got the perfect name – Massive Cheese Co. It’s great, right? There’s only one problem – you sell coffee, not cheese. You see where we’re going with this, don’t you?

Okay, so that’s an extreme example. However, it’s the perfect way of demonstrating the importance of choosing the right name for your brand – something that many companies, both large and small, get wrong.

Here are five things to consider when you’re naming – or even renaming – your business.

  • Consider what you’re selling and who your clients are.

    Your business name should align with your brand’s values, reflect the products or services you offer, and appeal to your customers.

    For example, we’re a creative agency working within various design disciplines – a name like “Ginger Fox Studio” allows for much more flexibility than something like “Ginger Fox Animation”, which would potentially limit us to a specific field.

    Any potential limitations have to be considered from the start if you think you may diversify into other areas.

  • Do your research!

    While it’s important to research potential competitors, you should also explore the broader market to ensure your chosen name isn’t already in use by somebody else.

    A quick search on Google, social media platforms, and Companies House will give you a better understanding of what’s already out there. Spending a little extra time on research is better than having all of your brand identity and promotional materials created, only to have to discard them and start again because a company with a similar name already exists!


  • Make it easy to pronounce and spell.

    A memorable name that rolls off the tongue effortlessly (not to mention easy to spell) will make it easier for customers to remember and recommend your business. Consider using something catchy and unique, whilst still being relevant and memorable. After all, choosing a strong name for your business could be one of the reasons for its success!

  • Look at your competition.

    Researching your competition is vital when naming your business.

    What are your competitors called? You want to stand out from the crowd, and definitely want to avoid any confusion with similar-sounding names, especially if you both offer similar products or services. Making sure you conduct a thorough analysis of businesses in your industry will not only ensure your chosen name is distinct and memorable, but will also help you to avoid potential legal issues! This leads us nicely into our next point…


  • Check domain names.

    The research doesn’t end when you’ve picked your business name! A strong online presence can be crucial, so make sure to check the availability of domain names, too.

    If you can’t purchase the right domain name, it might be time to take a step back and have a re-think. At the very least, you should aim to obtain the .com and variations of your chosen domain name – this will help to protect your brand and brand name in the future.
